A New Addition has arrived at Lennel

There has been much research done on the advantages of having a pet around in a nursing home.  After a very informal question and answer session with the residents here at Lennel we have looked at the evidence regarding the benefits, and have decided that this is a therapy that we would like to introduce. We are therefore training our own dog Jack to fill this role.  He is a 14 week old Golden Retriever puppy with a full pedigree, vet checked, fully vaccinated male.  The residents will be involved in the training and walking of Jack where appropriate and possible.  Each afternoon Jack will be involved with the residents to socialise him from a very early age with the residents.  We have already seen the delights of having Jack around with a positive response from advanced dementia sufferers.   We will keep you all updated on the progress.

News from Buccleuch St. Margaret's Care Centre

Robbie Burns was celebrated at St Margaret's and Buccleuch with 3 pipers coming into the home to pipe in the haggis while a member of staff read out a rabbie burns poem to them whilst the Chef stabbed the haggis!  All enjoyed haggis, tatties and turnip along with a wee nip of whisky.  All the residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Dignity day was celebrated in the home with a workshop for all the staff and some relatives joined in as well as residents to go through and talk about the ten points of dignity. On a personal note there was more highlighted on this subject than what was known to the public and the residents.
The new Activities Co-ordinator has been carrying out baking with some of the residents, and this has been enjoyed by everyone.  Resident have been taking part in arts and crafts, quizzes and generally keeping them busy every day which has been appreciated by everyone.
We celebrated recently when one of our residents celebrated her 90th birthday.  We held a party for her and her family and friends to enjoy and this was enjoyed by all.

Cheese & Wine Afternoon at Bonchester Bridge

Residents and Staff at Bonchester Bridge Care Home in Hawick enjoyed a Cheese and Wine Afternoon in celebration of Dignity Action Day, with a lovely selection of cheeses including Brie, Applewood, Red Leicester, Stilton, Boursin and two infused soft cheeses which proved to me among our favourites, one with pineapple and the other with garlic and herbs.  As well as a wonderful selection of red and white wine and two very popular non-alcoholic wines, our cheeseboard included fresh grapes and various other nibbles, which we all enjoyed so much we had to have our evening meal a bit later than usual!   One resident commented, “It’s been another grand Weens day!” – the former name of our care home being Weens House, the resident went on to thank the staff for providing “what had been yet another lovely treat”.

Pittendreich's News

Residents and families at Pittendreich Care Centre celebrated this traditional day, Wednesday 25th January 2012, by having a Burns lunch. Haggis, Neeps and Tatties were served.  Our other tradition, Whisky was also served for those who wished.  Our tables were tasteful decorated in tartan and heather.  During the evening residents enjoyed oatcakes with various cheeses to a sing song from one of our residents whilst another recited poems by Rabbie Burns.

Residents and staff welcomed our Activities Co-ordinator to her new post on Monday 30th January 2012.  One resident asked her to take a walk within our gardens where she received snowdrops especially picked for her.
